EV Charger Load Management

Prevent consumer unit overload by fitting a compatible load management device alongside your EV charger.

If your property's electrical supply cannot comfortably support a 7kW EV charger alongside existing high-demand appliances, load management can allow installation without upgrading the incoming supply. My EV Box installs compatible load management devices across North East England.

What is EV Charger Load Management?

Load management is a method of controlling the rate at which an EV charger draws power from the electrical supply, so that the total demand from the charger and other appliances in use at the same time does not exceed the capacity of the main fuse or incoming supply.

Without load management, an older property with a limited incoming supply may not be able to support a 7kW charger operating at full power at the same time as a cooker, electric shower or other high-draw appliances. This can cause nuisance tripping of the main fuse or consumer unit breakers.

My EV Box installs load management devices compatible with leading charger models across Hartlepool, Teesside, County Durham, Sunderland, Newcastle and the wider North East. The device monitors the property's overall electrical demand and automatically reduces the charger output when other high-demand loads are in use.

In many properties, fitting a load management device avoids the cost and disruption of upgrading the incoming electrical supply.

Compatible with Leading Chargers

We fit load management devices compatible with Ohme, BG Sync EV, Myenergi Zappi and other leading charger models.

Current Transformer Installation

A current transformer (CT clamp) is fitted to monitor overall supply demand and communicate with the charger in real time.

NICEIC Approved

All load management installations are completed to NICEIC approval standards with full testing and certification.

Included in New Installations

Load management assessment is included in every new EV charger installation quotation. We advise on whether it is required for your property.

Typical Pricing

Standard home EV charger installations start from approximately £749, subject to charger model, cable length, cable route, electrical supply and review of photographs or a site survey.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Many modern properties with an upgraded consumer unit and a 100A incoming supply can support a 7kW charger without load management. Properties with older supplies, 60A or 80A incoming fuses, or shared incoming supplies may benefit from or require load management. We assess this during the quotation process.
A current transformer (CT clamp) is fitted to the main incoming supply tails or within the consumer unit to monitor total electrical demand. The charger uses this information to adjust its output so that the combined demand stays within the supply capacity.
Load management will reduce charging speed during periods of high electrical demand in the property — for example, when an electric shower or cooker is in use. During periods of low demand, the charger operates at its full rated power. In practice, overnight charging is rarely affected.
This depends on the charger model. Some chargers support load management as an add-on via a retrofit CT clamp. Others have it built in. We advise on compatibility for your specific charger model during the assessment.
Current building regulations require that new EV charger installations in certain new-build properties include energy management systems. For existing properties, load management is not universally mandated but is strongly recommended where supply capacity is marginal.
